Backspace Writers Forum FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Discussion Forums

Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Discussion Forums

For New Members

Please begin by taking a moment to read the terms of condition and the forum rules. There aren’t many, but they’re important!

The forum headings are self-explanatory, but be sure to check out “Backspace Gold” under “Getting Published” – a forum where copies of extra-valuable threads are reposted so they’re readily available.

A few threads have been made “sticky” so they remain at the top of each forum and are easy to find, such as “Query Letters that Worked” in “Literary Agents.” If you’re looking for specific advice, the “search” feature is quick and comprehensive.

And whenever you’re ready to say hello, feel free to post an introduction to the group in the forum titled “Who’s Who” under “Diversions.”

For Published Authors

1. To have your books (published and/or contracted for) included in the “Backspace Members Books” list in the FAQ section of the discussion forums and on the Backspace homepages, send your information to Karen Dionne in the following format:

Karen Dionne - FREEZING POINT (Berkley, September 30, 2008)

This list is used as a reference in featuring members’ new releases each month in the Backspace newsletter (circulation 1,000), so if you’d like yours included, it’s important that the list stay current.

2. To insert an image of your book cover in your signature line, go to your User CP (control panel), click on "Edit Signature" and then link to the image by clicking on the yellow “mountain” icon above the text box. The forum software can’t resize images, so the image you link to needs to be very small about (half the size of a typical amazon or Barnes & Noble graphic). If you don’t know how to resize the image yourself and host it on the web, you can send a PM (private message) to either Comma Boy (Keith) or Marlys, and they'll be happy to assist.

For Soon-to-be-Published Authors

1. Guest Speaker Program

Once a month, literary agents, acquisitions editors, best-selling authors, reviewers, publicists, and others associated with writing and publishing conduct three-day question and answer sessions with the group.

In addition, publicity consultant Bella Stander drops in around the 15th of every month to answer members' questions. Post your marketing and publicity questions to her at any time in her forum under the heading "Guest Speakers, Current and Scheduled."

Our guests have set aside time from their schedules to visit Backspace because they want to answer members’ questions and share their hard-earned expertise, so there’s no reason to be shy. Remember, in the cyberworld, if you don’t speak up, you don’t exist!

2. The Critique Section

While Backspace offers a section where members can post their query letters or short excerpts for comment, critiques are not the main focus of the discussion forum. A few tips on how to get the most out of the critique section are posted here.

For All Members

1. Website Listing

To have your website listed on the Backspace Publishers Marketplace blog, the Backspace homepages, and the “About the Organization” page on the 2008 Backspace Writers Conference website, send an email to Karen with your name and website address to

2. Backspace Short Story Contests

To encourage the writing of publishable short works, Backspace holds regular in-house short story contests. A set of parameters is posted by the previous contest winner, along with instructions for entering. While there are no prizes beyond the accolades of your peers (and the opportunity to run the next contest), many of the stories written for our contests have gone on to see publication. More info here.

3. The Backspace Marathon

Twice a year, in November and May, Backspace sponsors an in-house NaNoWriMo-like challenge, The Backspace Marathon, in which participants set a goal for themselves of writing either 30K or 50K in 30 days.

4. Ask an Expert Forum

This forum is currently monitored by Kristin Nelson, Nelson Literary Agency; Kate Epstein, Epstein Literary Agency; Jeff Kleinman, Folio Literary Management; Janet Reid, JetReid Literary Agency; Jessica Faust, Bookends, LLC; Dave Kuzminski, Preditors and Editors, who drop in as often as they are able. If you have questions specifically for our literary agent members and other experts, post them here.

5. General forum navigation

Most answers regarding the vBulletin software and how to navigate the site can be found in the FAQ section, but if you run into difficulties, don’t hesitate to ask Karen Dionne and Christopher Graham, either by Private Message or email.

Forum Rules, Terms of Use

NO OFFENSIVE POSTS. We ask that you use common sense when you post or start a thread. If you think there's a chance your post will make someone mad ... it probably will. Any post or thread that picks on someone based on their race, creed, gender, religion, etc., would fall into this category.

NO PERSONAL ATTACKS. The previous Rule should have made this perfectly clear, but in case it didn't, here it is again worded a little differently. You can argue, disagree, and debate about writing, publishing, and other related activities, but no personal attacks! If you don't agree with someone, tell them. If you don't like someone else's statements you can voice your opinion, but you can't call them an 'idiot' etc.

NO POLITICS. This forum is about writing and publishing. There are many other forums on the Internet that are far more appropriate for political discussion and debate, so please don't voice your political (or religious) views or opinions here (unless it has something to do with the goals of this forum, i.e. writing and publishing). If you're not sure if your post falls into this category, please contact an Administrator or Moderator privately to inquire.

Please note: Posted Material belongs to the author. Do not distribute their comments or post them to other websites without the author's permission. This applies to Backspace members' posts as well as our guest speakers'.
